Choosing Shapewear: A Simple Guide to Styles and Fit
Shapewear is designed to smooth lines under clothes and help outfits sit neatly. The right piece depends on your outfit and how firm you want it to feel. This guide covers the main styles and how to choose a size.
Start with your outfit
- Fitted dresses: a full body or slip gives a smooth line from bust to thigh.
- Skirts and trousers: high-waisted briefs or shorts smooth the waist and hips.
- Low backs or strapless: look for styles with adjustable or removable straps.
Main styles
- Bodies: one-piece styles that smooth the torso. Many can be worn with your own bra.
- High-waisted briefs and shorts: smooth the tummy and hips; shorts also help prevent thighs rubbing.
- Slips: sit under dresses and help fabric glide rather than cling.
- Control tights: add a smoothing panel at the top of tights.
Firmness
Shapewear is often described as light, medium or firm control. Light control is best for all-day comfort and everyday wear; firmer styles suit occasions. If you are new to shapewear, start lighter.
Getting the size right
- Measure your waist and hips and use the brand's chart on our size guides page.
- Do not size down to get a firmer effect. Shapewear that is too small can roll, dig in and feel uncomfortable.
- If you are between sizes, the larger size is usually more comfortable for long wear.
Comfort tips
- Try it on and sit down: it should stay in place without rolling at the waist or legs.
- Choose breathable fabrics for long days.
- Wash after each wear, following the care label, to help the fabric keep its stretch.
