How to Care for Lingerie So It Lasts Longer
Good lingerie is an investment, and a little care helps it keep its shape, colour and stretch. These tips work for most pieces, but always follow the care label first.
Check the label
Every garment's care label is the best guide for that fabric. If it says hand wash, it is worth doing so.
Hand washing (best for most lingerie)
- Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water.
- Add a small amount of gentle detergent made for delicates.
- Soak for a few minutes, then gently swish. Avoid scrubbing or wringing.
- Rinse in cool water until the water runs clear.
- Press out water by rolling the piece in a clean towel.
If you use a washing machine
- Fasten bra hooks so they do not snag other items.
- Use a mesh laundry bag.
- Choose a cool, delicate cycle with a low spin.
- Wash with similar colours, especially dark or bright shades.
Drying
- Dry flat or hang over a line, away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Do not tumble dry: heat can damage elastane, lace and moulded cups.
- Hang bras by the centre, not the straps, to avoid stretching.
Hosiery
- Hand wash in cool water, ideally after each wear.
- Wear gloves or take off rings when putting stockings or tights on, to avoid snags.
- For hold-ups, keep the grip band free from lotion and wash it gently to help it keep its hold.
Satin, silk-look and lace
- Satin and lace are delicate: hand wash and dry flat.
- Iron satin on a low setting on the reverse side only if the label allows.
- Store lace pieces flat so the trims keep their shape.
Storing your lingerie
- Keep moulded bras with the cups nested together, not folded in half.
- Use a drawer divider or soft pouch for delicate pieces.
- Store robes and nightwear folded or on padded hangers.
Rotate your favourites
Giving bras a day off between wears lets the elastic recover, which helps them last longer.
