How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home

A bra that fits well is more comfortable, looks smoother under clothes and lasts longer. Measuring at home takes about five minutes. All you need is a soft tape measure, a mirror and a non-padded bra (or no bra).

What you need

  • A soft (fabric or plastic) tape measure
  • A mirror, so you can check the tape is level
  • A pen and paper

Step 1: Measure your underband

Stand straight and wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust, where a bra band would sit. Keep the tape level all the way round and breathe out normally. Note the measurement in inches.

If the number is even, that is your starting band size. If it is odd, round up to the next even number. For example, 31 inches becomes a 32 band.

Step 2: Measure your bust

Wrap the tape loosely around the fullest part of your bust, again keeping it level across your back. Do not pull it tight. Note this number in inches.

Step 3: Work out your cup size

Take your band size away from your bust measurement. Each inch of difference is roughly one cup size:

Difference Cup
1 inch A
2 inches B
3 inches C
4 inches D
5 inches DD
6 inches E
7 inches F

So a 32 inch band with a 36 inch bust gives a 4 inch difference, which is a 32D.

Step 4: Check the brand's own chart

Sizing varies between brands, especially across European labels, which may use centimetres and different cup steps. Always check the chart for the brand you are buying on our size guides page before you order.

How a good fit should feel

  • Band: firm and level, sitting on the loosest hook when new. It should not ride up at the back.
  • Cups: no gaping at the top and no spilling over the edge.
  • Underwire (if any): sits flat against your ribcage and fully surrounds the breast tissue.
  • Straps: stay put without digging in. The band, not the straps, should do most of the supporting.

If the fit is not quite right

If the band feels right but the cups are wrong, try going up or down a cup. If you need a different band, you may need a sister size: our guide to sister sizing explains how this works.
