Stockings vs Hold-Ups vs Tights: Which Should You Choose?
Stockings, hold-ups and tights can look similar once they are on, but they are worn very differently. Here is how to choose the right one for your outfit and your day.
Tights
Tights are a single garment that covers you from waist to toe, so there is nothing to clip or adjust.
Good for: work, everyday wear, colder weather and anyone who wants the easiest option. Things to know: choose the right height and hip size from the brand chart, as tights that are too short tend to sag and feel uncomfortable.
Shop tights.
Hold-ups
Hold-ups are individual leg pieces with a grip band inside the top, usually silicone, which keeps them in place on the thigh without a suspender belt.
Good for: warmer days, weddings and dresses where you want bare skin at the top of the leg without extra layers. Things to know: the fit of the top band matters. If it is too loose, they may slip; too tight and they can feel uncomfortable. Avoid applying body lotion to your thighs just before wearing them, as it can stop the grip band holding.
Shop hold-ups.
Stockings
Traditional stockings have no grip band. They are worn with a suspender belt, which clips to the top of each stocking.
Good for: a classic, vintage look and the most secure hold. Things to know: you will need a suspender belt (or a basque or corset with suspender straps). Put the belt on first, then the stockings, then your briefs over the top so you can visit the bathroom without unclipping.

What does denier mean?
Denier measures the thickness of the yarn. As a rough guide: - Under 15 denier: very sheer, best for special occasions - 15 to 30 denier: sheer and versatile - 40 denier and above: more opaque and usually more durable
